Riverside, CAJerry Glenn Ames, age 88, of Anaheim, California, passed from this life on September 25, 2023 at his home in Anaheim.
Jerry was born June 26, 1935 in Greenville, Texas, the eldest of two children born to Frank and Vera (Jacobs) Ames. He grew up in a small, rural farming community and entered college as an agriculture major at East Texas State College. There he met and courted Loretta Shelton. Jerry made the decision to join the Army in 1955 and completed his basic training at Ft. Carson, Colorado, after which Jerry and Loretta were married on June 28, 1955 in Greenville, Texas.
Jerry’s future career was initiated with his Army training. He and Loretta moved to New Jersey, where he was enrolled in the Army’s Signal Corps radar school. Following training, he was transferred to Ft Huachuca, near Tucson, Arizona where he serviced radar equipment. Their first child, Jeff was born at the base hospital in 1957. He was honorably discharged in April 1958. After his military service, he gained employment with Hughes Aircraft Company in Tucson, working on radar test equipment. Jerry transferred to the Hughes facility in Southern California where he worked as a test engineer until his retirement in 1989. The family moved to San Pedro, where their daughter Lauri was born in 1960. In 1962, they purchased their home in Anaheim, where Jerry and Loretta would live until shortly before his passing. Their last child, Scott, was born in 1964. They have five grandchildren: Melissa, Justin, Kimberly, Amanda, and Ryan, with two great-grandchildren on the way.
Jerry’s hobbies included rock hounding, lapidary, beekeeping, woodworking, gardening, and computers. He was hardworking, self-reliant, and loved his family. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Sandra, and his daughter Lauri. He will be greatly missed.
A committal service with military honors will be held for Jerry on Friday, October 13th at 10:15 AM at the Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd., Riverside, CA 92518, where he will be interred."*" indicates required fields
